Alternative energy sources
There can be no energy crisis in a country where the authorities, entrepreneurs and residents work together to find alternative solutions to the problem.
Over recent decades, the green energy sector has developed rapidly in Ukraine. Now, however, it is not simply a matter of addressing environmental issues, but a genuine path towards the country’s energy independence. This concerns the production of biogas and biomethane. Unlike other sources of green energy, this sector solves the problem of waste disposal by transforming waste into light and heat.
Besides the fact that biogas does not need to be pumped out from underground through geological exploration and drilling, or by destroying layers of gas-bearing rock, its production cannot be politically or economically manipulated by exporting countries. In other words, it offers the possibility of independent fuel and energy production from what is essentially “right under our feet.”
Biogas is extracted from livestock waste, food industry waste, wastewater and solid household waste (sorted, free of inorganic admixtures and impurities of non-natural origin). It turns out that virtually any local natural resource can be used. Biomethane, meanwhile, is biogas that has been further purified and can be pumped through gas transmission and distribution systems or used as motor fuel. In other words, this is an ongoing natural process, with a resource base that is practically inexhaustible.
«Recently, my colleagues and I visited one of the new Ukrainian biomethane plants in the region. Enterprises like this are an example of the development of Ukraine’s green energy sector and of work towards ensuring full gas and energy independence. The Kyiv Regional Development Agency currently has every capability to provide specialist advice and help develop projects for building biomethane plants in our region. Kyiv region has enormous raw-material potential in this area, which is bound to attract foreign investors», shares Oleksandr Vakhovskyi, Director of the Agency.
‼️This summer, the Government approved a draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine «On the Procedure for the Operation of the Biomethane Register». This means it has become possible to issue producers guarantees of origin for biomethane fed into the gas transmission system. This is a necessary component of the future market for the production and use of biomethane in Ukraine, both to replace gas and to sell biomethane to EU countries.
As we can see, developing biomethane plants is a highly promising and profitable direction. Most importantly, it is essential for ensuring Ukraine’s energy independence.
